Campfire Cooking Workshop ($80)

  • Millersylvania State Park (Group Camp) 12245 Tilley Road Southwest Olympia, WA, 98512 United States (map)

It’s hard to beat the tastes and flavors of a hot cooked meal when you’re outdoors. If you are ready to be the next camp chef, this field outing is for you! In this course, you’ll utilize a variety of campfire cooking methods, test different outdoor cookware, and learn to hand-carve wooden implements to improve your skills around the fire.

Lessons, Activities and Learning Goals

  1. Fire building foundations + tips, tricks, and strategies for challenging weather

  2. Campfire cooking safety, first-aid considerations, cooking in wilderness areas, and general outdoor preparedness

  3. Cookware options like cast iron, stainless steel, titanium and more with their pros/cons

  4. Hand-carved wooden structures and implements to support campfire cooking like roasting sticks, tripods, and suspended systems

  5. Practice and training with 3 food samples and demonstrations for class participants to make themselves and test out (cast iron nachos, wild tea, and bannock).

  6. After class ends, stick around for a bring-your-own-dinner social around the fire in the evening (6:30 PM to 8:00 PM)

Accessibility

  • The park is flat with very little elevation gain. We will stay on trails during short hikes to study different plants and natural materials. Walks and hikes will not exceed 1/2 mile

  • Some of our fire activities will require participants to crouch or kneel on the ground - we welcome you to bring a small camp chair or other seating accessory if that is helpful for you!

  • Participants will be trained to use carving knives to make wooden implements. This may be challenging for folks with hand / wrist injuries or arthritis

What’s included in registration?

Class registration fees include tools, firewood, facility rental, demonstration cookware, some sample food items, and supplies necessary for the session. Please bring your own mess kit (mug, plate, utensils) for taste testing. Sample foods and cooking activities will serve as demonstrations and training only and can augment food participants bring for snacks and post-session social dinner.
