Campfire Cooking Workshop | April 11 | 2:30 PM - 6:30 PM

$80.00

It’s hard to beat the tastes and flavors of a hot cooked meal when you’re outdoors. If you are ready to be the next camp chef, this field outing is for you! In this course, you’ll utilize a variety of campfire cooking methods, test different outdoor cookware, and learn to hand-carve wooden implements to improve your skills around the fire.

In this course, you’ll build fires, hand-carve wooden structures for cooking, and make three food samples to try out over the fire (cast iron nachos, wild tea, and bannock).

Lessons, Activities and Learning Goals

  1. Fire building foundations + tips, tricks, strategies for challenging weather

  2. Campfire cooking safety, first-aid considerations, cooking in wilderness areas, and general outdoor preparedness

  3. Cookware options like cast iron, stainless steel, titanium and more with their pros/cons

  4. Hand-carved wooden structures and implements to support campfire cooking like roasting sticks, tripods, and suspended systems

  5. Practice and training with samples and demonstrations for class participants to make themselves and test out, like bannock, wild tea, and more

  6. After class ends, stick around for a social around the fire in the evening (6:30 PM to 8:00 PM)

Accessibility

  • The park is flat with very little elevation gain. We will stay on trails during short hikes to study different plants and natural materials. Walks and hikes will not exceed 1/2 mile

  • Some of our fire activities will require participants to crouch or kneel on the ground

  • Participants will be trained to use carving knives to make wooden implements. This may be challenging for folks with hand / wrist injuries or arthritis

Restrooms and other accommodations

Millersylvania State Park has numerous flush toilet and shower bathrooms on site. We will be at the Group Camp.

What’s included in registration?

Class registration fees include tools, cookware, some sample food items, and supplies necessary for the session. Please bring your own mess kit (mug, plate, utensils) and camping equipment to use for the overnight. Participants will be expected to bring their own food from home for main meals (dinner on April 11th and breakfast on April 12th). Sample foods and cooking activities will serve as demonstrations and training only and can augment meals participants bring.
