Join Licia, artist and naturalist from Firecraft Northwest for this hands-on workshop hosted at Laurie’s house! You’ll learn how to craft a basket from foraged Ponderosa Pine needles and a hand-made wooden base.
We’ll discuss how to identify the correct species for harvesting needles, when and how to harvest, and how to prepare your pine needles for basketry. Choose from multiple thread colors and wooden bases (unfinished, walnut oil finished, or adorned with pressed flower) to add your own creative touch to your basket. Then, you’ll learn how to start your basket with a wooden base, practice different stitches, understand and practice shaping walls, and learn about how to finish your basket. Pine needle basketry is a slow and consistent craft, similar to knitting, crocheting, and embroidery - it requires a bit of patience and practice, but can be a very meditative and rewarding experience once you get the hang of it!
Please bring with you:
A plastic bag or tupperware for transporting your basket home if you’d like
A plastic bag for taking home handfuls of soaked pine needles (gallon ziplock or larger) if you don’t finish your basket
A small hand towel or washcloth (may get dirty)
Scissors
Journal and pen for taking notes (optional)
Water/snack (optional)
Pliers (optional)
Wednesday, February 25
