Get started in basketry skills with this hands-on twining class using natural materials. This workshop is designed to help beginners get into the craft using easy-to-source natural materials: 100% cotton cord and jute twine.
The “twining” technique we’ll use for these baskets is the same used for many baskets made out of brambles, such as ivy, blackberry, and other vines. But, for this class, there’s no mess, harvest, or materials preparation as is common with other basketry materials, so you can get right into weaving your basket. Learn how to start, twine, and finish a twined basket and take home your own mini cotton and jute basket — lots of colors and two cotton cord sizes available. We’ll also discuss how to source, harvest, and prepare local brambles if you’d like to start working with harvested materials for your next project.
For this crafternoon, we’ll be outside at a covered shelter in the beautiful Squaxin Park among the birds and trees!
Accessibility and other notes:
Flush toilets and drinking water a short walk from the shelter
Free parking available onsite; handicapped parking available
We will be seated at picnic tables for the duration of the class, feel free to bring a seat pad if you’d like for extra cushion or a camp chair
This skill uses fine motor skills and repetitive motions that may be difficult for those with arthritis or other joint pain/stiffness
