Thanks to our partners at Capitol Land Trust, we’ll get to explore a not-yet-open-to-the-public preserve on Henderson Inlet for a morning of blackberries! Though an invasive plant, Himalayan Blackberry has many uses. We’ll start the morning hearing from a Capitol Land Trust representative about the site, how Himalayan blackberry affects the ecosystem, and their efforts to remove the invasive plant.
We’ll spend some time harvesting parts of the blackberry plant—which will be helpful for Capitol Land Trust stewardship efforts as well as our morning together! We’ll make blackberry leaf tea, enjoy fresh blackberries, and learn how to make blackberry cordage from the stalk. You’ll learn how to harvest, prepare, and make natural cordage using the reverse-wrap method and take home your very own blackberry cord bracelet and/or stretch of cordage.
Saturday, August 15
9:30-12
Inspiring Kids Preserve, Capitol Land Trust site 15 minutes north east of downtown Olympia on Johnson Point Road NE- address and directions will be provided in the reminder email the week prior to the event
