During this hands-on workshop series you’ll make three of your own baskets from foraged Ponderosa Pine needles!
Session 1 | Getting Started | Sunday, October 4 | 1:00-5:00PM
During this intro session, we’ll discuss how to identify the correct species for harvesting needles, when and how to harvest, and honorable and sustainable harvesting practices. Then, you’ll choose from multiple thread colors and wooden bases (unfinished, walnut oil finished or adorned with pressed flower) to add your own creative touch to your basket. You’ll build your first basket as you practice multiple different stitches, shaping walls, and learn about how to finish and seal your first basket!
Session 2 | Advanced Techniques | Sunday, October 18 | 1:00-5:00PM
In session two, you’ll make a second basket solely from pine needles, with the traditional “coil” start. This starting method is the traditional way to start baskets but is a bit more challenging and requires a bit more patience! We’ll also learn a new stitch technique if you’d like, or use the opportunity to refine skills you learned in session one to complete a second basket.
Session 3 | Beads, Handles, and More! | Sunday, November 1 | 1:00-5:00PM
By session three, you’ll be making your third basket, with the option to add beads, handles, and other artsy finishing techniques! We’ll start again with a wooden base to get you up and running quickly, and then you can use any of the stitches we’ve learned so far. If you’d like, you can add beads, you can use the “fascicles” as adornments, and/or you can add a handle or two, with lots of variety for a design of your choosing!
Notes:
Classes include all weaving materials and you’ll finish the series with three baskets.
Each class will meet at The Carpenter’s House Gallery — this is a comfy spot with our own private space, bathroom, kitchenette and gallery for checking out art from local artists!
We’ll have a two week break between classes so you’ll have time to finish baskets if needed or make another in between class!
We’ll talk about how to harvest and prepare needles in session 1, so you’ll be equipped with the knowledge to practice harvesting, prepping, and making your own baskets between classes if you’d like and I can help you with any questions/issues you might run into.
Pine needle basketry is a slow and consistent craft, similar to knitting, crocheting, and embroidery - it requires a bit of patience and practice, but can be a very meditative and rewarding experience once you get the hang of it!
Please bring with you to each session:
A plastic bag or tupperware for transporting your basket home
A hand towel
Scissors
Journal and pen for taking notes (optional)
Water/snack (optional)
Pliers (optional)
Sit pad or camp chair for comfort (optional)
