Wild Women Walk - Blue Moon (FULL)
Join Licia from Firecraft Northwest for a women’s-only full moon walk. This is our second full moon in May, making it a Blue Moon! This event only comes along every two or three years, hence the phrase “once in a blue moon.” We’ll spend the evening meandering the trails at Woodard Bay Conservation Area, spending some time to see if we can catch another special moment - the bats feeding their young!

(rescheduled) Community Nature Journaling - Spring (Free)
Join us each season for a casual nature journaling session with other artists, nature lovers, and those wanting to slow down and notice. There will be minimal facilitation at the start of the event and some ideas for those just getting started. Then, most of the time will be spent sketching, painting, coloring, etc. in your nature journal. At the end, we’ll do an optional share out for those who want to share with the group what they worked on and/or noticed during the session. Wildflowers and Plants of the Oak Prairie ($25)
Below the South Sound and many areas of Western Washington and Oregon remain a small fraction of beautiful Oak Prairies that once stretched far and wide. Fire & Survival Basics Workshop for Women ($45+) (FULL)
Hone your fire-starting skills and survival knowhow to prepare for the upcoming camping season! This workshop will focus on fire-building, including fire-starting 101, what local resources we have in the PNW for successfully starting fires in any weather, and practice with multiple ignition types. We’ll also dive into survival basics, learning about prioritizing needs in survival situations, best practices for trip preparation, and an overview of essential gear. This workshop is geared towards beginners hoping to get more confident in exploring the outdoors solo or with friends and family.
Registration options include the option to add on a Morakniv camp knife and/or handmade ferro rod.

Getting Started in Birding (FREE)
Join naturalists and bird nerds from Firecraft Northwest, for an interactive lecture at Centralia Library to learn foundational concepts in the world of birding. This workshop will cover introductory principles like how to ID birds in the field (field markings), how to know which species we have in our area and when (range maps and migration patterns), and resources to help you make a positive ID (field guides, local hot spots, and binoculars). We'll also do a quick look at other ways you can engage with birds beyond visual ID -- nests, tracks, songs, feathers, and other signs. Space is limited, arrive early to claim your spot.
Getting Started in Whittling and Carving ($69)
In this introductory class, students will learn the tools and techniques of whittling and carving as they craft their own project from a simple branch of wood. Projects will will vary throughout the year, designed by the instructor based on wood availability and season. Students will be guided with step-by-step instructions to take home their first project and gain skills and experience to continue carving wood after the class.

Basketry Workshop - Intro to Twining with Brambles ($45) (FULL)
During this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn the basics of making baskets with natural materials using the “twining” technique. We’ll talk about which “brambles” we have in our area that are great for this style of basketry as well as how to harvest and prepare materials. Then, we’ll prepare our bramble - English Ivy - by splitting the stems and discuss other preparation processes. As a group, we’ll each make our own twined basket learning how to start, weave, and finish. All experience levels welcome and all materials included.

Trip Planning & Navigation 101 for Women ($35)
Join Licia from Firecraft Northwest for a morning of trip planning and navigation 101 for women! This in-field, hands-on course will start with an overview of resources for planning your next trip safely. Then, we’ll go into map reading 101 and do an activity to practice situational awareness and placing yourself within the landscape. We’ll go over the components of a compass, how you use them, and learn about how a map and compass pair together to help you find your way. Then, we’ll practice navigating a route and taking a bearing in the field. We’ll finish up with a quick discussion of safety and gear tips as well as resources for continued learning. This course is geared towards beginners - no experience required. Bring your own compass and/or use one of ours to practice.

Wild Women Walk - Strawberry/Salmonberry Moon (FREE)
Join Licia from Firecraft Northwest for June’s Wild Women Walk - the Strawberry or Salmonberry Moon. As the name suggests, the wild, June-bearing strawberries may be ripe as well as the native Salmonberry, which also brings with it the Swainson’s Thrush (aka Salmonberry bird!). Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually Wildlife Refuge will be a great place to see the berries, birds, and, if it’s a clear night, the rising moon!
We’ll do a slow meander along the boardwalk and out to the delta with a silent stretch on the way back to notice, listen, and be present. This outing is free, but RSVP is required.
Summer Plant ID Series for Beginners ($99) (3 sessions)
If you’ve been wanting to impress all of your friends with your knowledge about plants, this series is the right place for you! Across three separate sessions, we’ll cover plant anatomy and botany basics, an introduction to ethnobotany, and an introduction to foraging. By the end of the series, you’ll leave with a strong foundation in plant studies, a deeper connection to the flora around you, and the resources to keep learning!

Basketry Workshop - Intro to Twining with Cotton and Jute ($40)
Get started in basketry skills with this hands-on twining class using natural materials. This workshop is designed to help beginners get into the craft using easy-to-source natural materials: 100% cotton cord and jute twine. The “twining” technique we’ll use for these baskets is the same used for many baskets made out of brambles, such as ivy, blackberry, and other vines. Learn how to start, twine, and finish a twined basket and take home your own mini cotton and jute basket (several colors available)! We’ll also discuss how to source, harvest, and prepare local brambles for your next project.

During this workshop you’ll learn the basics of botanical pressing including different techniques, tips, and tricks. You’ll put together your own take-home flower press kit made with unfinished wood (so you can paint, finish, or decorate it as you’d like!) Then, we’ll do three take-home crafts (all materials included) as starter ideas for using your new pressed flowers.

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to make your own drawing charcoal kit from scratch! The afternoon will include information about wood types for different types of charcoal and how to make your own charcoal kiln. Together, we’ll make our own drawing charcoal, charcoal holder, simple stick-bound drawing book, and blending stump. Intro to Bird Language ($15-$25)
It’s spring and the birds are singing! Join naturalists from Firecraft Northwest to tune your ears to the sounds of the spring forest and wetlands at Grass Lake Nature Park. We’ll do a brief overview of “bird language” at the start to set a foundation for what we’ll be listening to. Then, we’ll walk the paths at Grass Lake in the forest and to the wetlands to interpret the sounds we hear. Binoculars are optional for this event as we will be focusing on sound as opposed to sight identification. This outing is open for all skill levels, even beginners! Birding Walk with Capitol Land Trust (FULL)
Join naturalists and bird nerds from Firecraft Northwest and Capitol Land Trust this spring to practice your bird ID skills. During this outing we’ll walk the trails at a Capitol Land Trust preserve and identify the birds that we see and hear. The outing is open to all skills levels but will not feature structured educational content about bird identification; rather, we’ll walk, chat, and work together to identify the species we come across. Split, Stack, & Spark: Axes and Fire Training ($45)
During this outdoor, hands-on workshop, we’ll go through the steps of how to prepare a store-bought bundle of firewood into all of the components you need to successfully start a fire. Train with Firecraft Northwest instructors to learn how to safely use a knife, forest axe, splitting axe, and maul to prepare, process, and section wood into mixed sizes so you can quickly and easily get your fire started! We’ll also go over safety and practice with saws as an additional firewood-gathering skill in your toolkit. After successfully lighting our one-log fires, we’ll go over our favorite brands, resources, and more to continue practicing this camping season.

Campfire Cooking Workshop ($80) (FULL)
It’s hard to beat the tastes and flavors of a hot cooked meal when you’re outdoors. If you are ready to be the next camp chef, this field outing is for you! In this course, you’ll utilize a variety of campfire cooking methods, test different outdoor cookware, and learn to hand-carve wooden implements to improve your skills around the fire.

Wild Women Walks - Pink Moon (FREE)
Join Licia, naturalist and educator from Firecraft Northwest, for a full moon walk for women. April’s full moon is known, among other names, as the Pink Moon. This name derives from the pink phlox family flowers (as well as other native wildflowers) that come out in April in North America. But, on this trail we’ll likely also see osoberry, western trillium, and maybe salmonberry or flowering currant! Join us for a slow meander, native blooms, and blossoming new friendships.
Birds & Beavers Walk (FULL)
With the arrival of spring, the forests and wetlands are come alive! Rainy Day Fires Survival Training ($60+)
During this half-day hands-on course, we’ll do a walk through the woods to identify local resources for fire building, fire starting, and fire accelerants to prepare you for emergency fire-building or if you’d like to be able to harvest your own fire materials. We’ll learn fire fundamentals—including tips and tricks for overcoming rain and cold—and create tinder bundles from all natural, harvested materials. Participants will then be able to practice with several different ignition techniques including matches, lighters, ferrocerium rods, and flint and steel.

Intro to Broom Making - Pine Needle Hearth Brooms ($40)
Prepare for spring cleaning by making your own handheld broom! During the session you’ll learn about materials we have in our area for broom making as well as the basics of creating your own hand broom — including using a foot brake, starting/finishing your broom, and three stitching designs. You’ll walk away with your own pine needle hand broom - the perfect size for cleaning up around a hearth or fireplace, in a craft space, or around the house! Wild Women Walks - Worm Moon (FULL)
Join Licia from Firecraft Northwest and Sarah Croston from Capitol Land Trust for for March’s full moon sunset walk. March’s moon is known, among other names, as the Worm Moon, referring to when worms and other invertebrates emerge from the newly thawed ground. We’ll gather together for a walk near the Sound at a not-yet-open-to-the-public Capitol Land Trust site. We’ll discuss what new growth we see around us in the woods and what new growth, adventures, and goals may be happening in our own lives!

Intro to Nature Awareness ($25)
Join Licia, certified Meditation instructor, from Firecraft Northwest, for a quiet, fully engaged nature morning.
We’ll start with hot tea and a brief discussion about nature awareness before meandering into the woods to practice two silent, solitary awareness-building techniques. Then, we’ll do a sensory plant walk, learning plants that have unique tastes, smells, and/or textures. With a silent stroll back to the shelter, we’ll put into practice what we’ve learned. Reawaken your senses and reconnect with the natural world around you during this morning’s mindful outing!

A (Somewhat) Silent Stroll (FULL)
Join us for a somewhat silent stroll at Woodard Bay Conservation Area. We’ll meet each other at the trailhead and get to know each other for the first bit of trail. Then, we’ll head into the woods on the more narrow, meandering trail to be silent among the trees and birdsong. When we reach the water, we’ll take a moment at the shelter to share anything we noticed (internal or naturewise) before we head back to the parking lot. The walk back can be optional social or continued silent time - your choice!

Beginner’s Ethnobotany Walk ($25) [FULL]
The study of ethnobotany (human relationships with plants) paints a powerful picture of how humans have coexisted with the natural world around us. This includes medicine, tools, food, and more. If you are new to ethnobotany, this walk is a great place to get started and learn about core plants of the PNW and how they have been used for millennia, and how we can use them respectfully today.

PNW Tree ID ($25) (Full)
Hike along the forested trails at Woodard Bay Conservation Area to learn how to identify key trees of the Pacific Northwest. Participants will discover diagnostic features and botany principles to carry their tree id and botany skills forward beyond the session.

Happy Hour Waterfowl Walk (FULL)
Join naturalists and birders Licia Sahagun and Ryan Johnson for a happy hour waterfowl walk! In this session, participants will walk the trails around Capitol Lake searching for and identifying the waterfowl we see, like Mallards, wood ducks, wigeons, geese, buffleheads, pintails, and more! This session is welcome to beginning birders and experts alike.

Refund POLicy
Our classes run rain or shine!
Our outdoor classes will run in all safe weather conditions. We check the weather in the days leading up to the outing and the day of and will send weather forecast information in our reminder email. We will run outdoor outings in all weather conditions unless it is unsafe (e.g. high winds in deciduous forest, poor air quality) or unsuitable for the content (e.g. pouring rain and high winds for a birding outing). Please reach out prior to booking if you have any questions, concerns, or would like help preparing for the outing.
Single Day Classes and Workshops
Refunds can be provided if cancellations are made 10 days before the date of the event minus administrative / processing fees (stripe, paypal, etc).
Overnight & Multi-Day Events
Each overnight or multi-day event will list specific refund policies on the registration page and on the Firecraft Northwest Classes Page. Overnight and multi-day events have stricter refund policies due to their timelines and scale (for example, more time is needed to fill a spot than a single day workshop, plus losses are heavier due to venue fees, credit card processing fees, and more administrative requirements).
Private & Custom Events
Clients booking Private and Custom Events will often pay deposits when arranging the session to protect both parties. For situations requiring refunds or other financial adjustments to Private and Custom Events, please contact us directly.
Special Circumstances
Of course, emergencies and extenuating circumstances happen. Please contact us for refunds based on individual needs/special circumstances. Unfortunately, as a small business, we cannot financially accommodate refunds for last minute illness even though we appreciate when participants stay home while sick for the benefit of other participants and the community.
